The term "China compostable package" often causes a lot of confusion. Many consumers believe that this means they can dispose of it freely in the environment because they only know that compost is a plant fertilizer. However, it is not. Like other materials, China compostable package must be processed and properly disposed of separately from other materials.

The benefit of China compostable package made from plant or fossil fuel materials is that its waste disposal is environmentally friendly, providing nutrients to the planet once fully decomposed. Regardless of the benefits, however, all China compostable package needs to be tested for disintegration, biodegradation and non-toxic effects, and disposed of properly. The packaging is also independently third-party certified and has the compostable logo added.
One of the areas with the largest market demand for China compostable package is food. Currently, there are very few functional food packaging solutions that are truly compostable. The issues holding back the wider use of China compostable package in the food industry are mainly cost, as it is often more expensive and doubts that the same shelf life as non-compostable package can be achieved.
