Custom Pouch MOQ Explained: Why Digital Printing Starts at 1,000 and Other Methods Require More
At BioPouches, our standard minimum order quantity depends on the printing method: 1,000 units for digital printing, 5,000 units for gravure printing, 5,000 units for flexographic printing, and 10,000 units for offset printing. The shape of the pouch does not set the MOQ. The printing method does.
BioPouches is the flexible packaging brand of the XWPAK packaging group. This article explains where our MOQs come from, why they differ so much between printing methods, and how to pick the one that fits your project.
| Printing method | Standard MOQ | Where it tends to fit |
|---|---|---|
| Digital printing | 1,000 units | Launches, testing, multiple designs, shorter runs |
| Gravure printing | 5,000 units | Established designs, larger recurring orders |
| Flexographic printing | 5,000 units | Longer runs where plate and press setup can be spread out |
| Offset printing | 10,000 units | Larger volumes, where the structure and print requirements suit it |
What Is BioPouches' Minimum Order Quantity?
Our standard MOQ is 1,000 pouches for digital printing, 5,000 for gravure, 5,000 for flexographic and 10,000 for offset. These are the quantities we work from when a customer asks what the minimum is.
Your material, dimensions, artwork and construction can still affect whether a project is feasible and how we quote it. We confirm those details in the quotation rather than assuming a standard figure fits every combination.
Why Does Printing Method Determine Our Pouch MOQ?
Every printing method has work that has to be done before the first good pouch comes off the line, and that work costs about the same whether you order a few hundred pieces or a few thousand. Our MOQ for each method is the point where the setup share carried by each pouch becomes reasonable.
Methods that need plates or cylinders made for your artwork have more setup to recover, so they need a longer run. Digital printing has far less of that setup, which is why its minimum is the lowest. When a customer asks us to produce fewer pieces, we first look at whether the setup and unit cost make sense for them, because a very small order on a setup-heavy method can end up with a unit price nobody wants to pay.
A simple way to see it: if the same fixed setup work is divided across 1,000 pouches, each pouch carries a share of it. Divide it across 5,000 pouches and each pouch carries one fifth of that share. We are not quoting setup costs here, only showing why the same work looks very different at different quantities.
This is also why the pouch shape is not what drives our minimum. A stand-up pouch and a flat-bottom pouch printed the same way face the same setup economics.
Digital Printing MOQ: 1,000 Pouches
At BioPouches, our standard MOQ for digital printing is 1,000 pouches, the lowest of our four printing methods.
Digital printing reduces the conventional printing-plate setup that other methods need, so the cost of getting your artwork onto the film is smaller and easier to spread over a short run. It also gives you flexibility with artwork. If you want to change a design between orders, or run several designs, you are not paying to remake plates each time.
That makes digital printing practical for product launches, packaging tests, brands with several flavors or sizes, and any project where you are not ready to commit to a large quantity of one design.
Gravure Printing MOQ: 5,000 Pouches
Our standard MOQ for gravure printing is 5,000 pouches, because gravure needs printing cylinders prepared for your artwork and a press set up and registered before production can start.
Cylinder preparation, setup and color registration all happen before the first usable pouch, and they take the same effort whatever the quantity. A larger run spreads that cost over more pieces, and it also gives the press time to settle into consistent production, which matters when every pouch in the order has to match.
Gravure makes the most sense for an established design you expect to reorder, or for a larger order where the setup cost becomes a small part of each pouch's price. For a design that is still changing, it is usually the wrong place to start.
Flexographic Printing MOQ: 5,000 Pouches
Our standard MOQ for flexographic printing is 5,000 pouches, the same as gravure, because flexo also needs plates prepared and a press set up for each design.
Plate preparation and press setup are fixed costs. Over a longer run they become a small slice of each pouch, which is what brings the unit price down. On a short run the same costs land on far fewer pieces.
The practical difference from digital is simple. Digital gives you lower quantities and easy design changes. Flexo gives you a lower unit price once you commit to a longer run of a settled design. Neither one is better across the board, they suit different stages of a project.
Offset Printing MOQ: 10,000 Pouches
BioPouches' standard MOQ for offset printing is 10,000 pouches, the highest of our four methods.
The general relationship holds here too: setup, production configuration and print requirements all have to be justified by order volume, and offset asks for the largest volume of the four.
One caution. Offset printing is not interchangeable with digital, gravure or flexography for every flexible packaging structure. Whether it suits your material and pouch construction is something we confirm for the specific project, so a customer interested in offset should talk to us about the structure before assuming it will work.
Can BioPouches Produce Fewer Than 1,000 Custom Pouches?
Sometimes, yes. We can occasionally produce fewer than 1,000 digitally printed pouches when a customer specifically needs a smaller quantity, though we cannot promise that every smaller order will be accepted.
The trade-off is price. Setup, materials, machine time and other production costs are the same whether we make 300 pouches or 1,000, so on a smaller order each pouch carries a bigger share of them and the unit price goes up. A customer who needs a smaller quantity should expect to pay more per piece than the 1,000-unit price.
If you are thinking about going below 1,000, tell us your design, quantity and material, and we will say whether it can be done and what it does to the price.
Does MOQ Change for Stand-Up, Flat-Bottom or Gusseted Pouches?
No. At BioPouches, the standard MOQ depends primarily on the printing method, not on the pouch shape or bag type, so stand-up pouches, flat-bottom pouches and gusseted pouches printed with the same method share the same standard MOQ.
That does not mean every project is identical. Your material, dimensions, artwork and construction can affect feasibility and quotation, and we review them for each order. What we do not do is set a different minimum quantity because a pouch is a flat-bottom instead of a stand-up. You can see the full range on our all products page.
Can Customers Order Just One Printed Sample?
Yes. Customers can request printed samples starting from one piece, subject to project feasibility. Custom printed samples carry a separate sampling cost.
The important distinction is between a printed sample and a commercial production run. A sample quantity of one does not mean the commercial production MOQ is one. Once you move to a production order, the standard MOQ for your printing method applies.
A printed sample is useful for checking dimensions, appearance, artwork and any packaging features you have specified, before you commit to a larger quantity. It is a check, not a promise. A printed sample may not reproduce every aspect of final mass production, so we treat it as a way to catch problems early rather than a guarantee of the finished order.
Are Stock Pouch Samples Free?
Stock samples may be provided free of charge, and customers normally pay the shipping. Stock samples are existing pouches, so there is no custom printing or setup involved.
That is the difference from a custom printed sample, which is made for your design and has its own sampling cost. If you only want to see the pouch format, size and material in your hands, a stock sample is the simpler route. If you want to see your own artwork on the pouch, you need a printed sample.
Which Printing Method Should You Choose?
Choose the printing method that matches your order quantity and where your product is in its life. The quantity you can commit to usually decides it.
Launching, testing or running several designs: digital printing, with its 1,000-unit standard MOQ and flexible artwork.
Settled design, larger recurring orders: gravure or flexographic printing, each at 5,000 units, where the setup cost is spread across a longer run.
Very large volumes: offset printing at 10,000 units, once we have confirmed it suits your pouch structure.
The choice does not have to be permanent. A project can start with digital printing while the design is still being tested, then move to gravure or flexographic printing once the design is settled and the volume justifies the larger minimum. What matters is matching the method to the quantity you can actually commit to today, not the one you hope to reach later.
If you are not sure, start with a sample and a conversation. Tell us the product, the quantity you expect to order, and whether the design might change. We will tell you which method fits and what to expect on price. You can contact BioPouches to discuss your project.
These MOQs apply to our flexible pouches. If you need rigid paper-based packaging instead, our group's paper tube brand, Earthycores, handles custom paper tube packaging.
