Flat Pouch Structure, Tear Notch and Zipper

A flat pouch is two panels of film sealed around the edges. It has no expanding side gussets and no formed flat base, so it does not stand upright by itself. It lies flat, and once it is filled it bulges in the middle. Capacity depends on width and length, which is why we ask for the fill weight and the product volume before we size it.

The tear notch and the zipper do two separate jobs. The notch opens the original sealed pouch. The customer tears the top strip along it, and that exposes the zipper. The zipper then closes the pouch again after each use. If the notch is placed badly, the tear runs off line. If the zipper is crooked or too close to the top seal, the pouch will not close properly.

Custom Material and Barrier Selection

The film is chosen for your cat and dog food. Dry kibble needs protection from moisture and oxygen. Treats usually carry more fat, and grease can reach the seal area and weaken it. The sealant layer also has to seal well, both to itself and around the zipper.

Material options can be customized. They include conventional barrier laminates, recyclable structures, PCR-containing films and compostable materials.

Printing and Artwork

You can customize the artwork, size and finish. We use digital, gravure or flexographic printing, depending on the project. A flat pouch has a front and a back panel to print. Keep text away from the sealed edges, the tear notch and the zipper area, because those parts get cut, covered or distorted. Keep the barcode on a flat area so it scans.

Four things need steady control. Cutting has to be accurate, or the artwork shifts toward the seal. The zipper has to be aligned and the tear notch correctly placed. Seals have to be consistent, because a weak edge seal is a leak.

Quality Control and Laboratory Testing

Production follows SOPs, equipment is cleaned daily and inspection results are recorded. Incoming film is inspected before use. Our QC team checks artwork and print alignment, color consistency and visible print defects, then pouch dimensions and cutting accuracy, zipper attachment and position, tear-notch placement and heat-seal consistency. Finished pouches are checked for appearance, weak seals, wrinkles, leaks and other defects.

The lab covers four main tests. Tensile testing shows film strength and resistance to pulling, which matters during filling and handling. Heat-seal strength testing shows how strong the seals are, which matters in transport and storage. Seal-integrity and leak testing help find leakage paths and defective seals. Coefficient-of-friction testing shows how the film surface moves against equipment and other surfaces, which affects how it runs on filling and sealing machines. Which tests apply depends on the order, and we do not publish results here.

Packing and Shipping

Finished empty pouches are counted and bundled flat, so the edges and zippers are not bent. They go into cartons that protect them from moisture and compression. Cartons are labeled, and shipping documents are prepared where they are needed. Order quantity, destination, carton dimensions, total weight and delivery requirements decide the shipping method. Air freight is faster and sea freight usually costs less. Costs, delivery dates and carton quantities are quoted per shipment.
